How the Jones Act of 1920 is like an unofficial tax on Puerto Rico.

According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau statistics, the median household income in Puerto Rico was around $24,000, while in the US , it was around $75,000. And yet when we look at the prices of most imported goods from the US sold on the island, we find that Puerto Ricans are paying significantly higher prices for those same goods. Well many have put the blame on the Jones Act imposed on Puerto Rico in 1920 by the United States. They argue that the Jones Act puts unjust shipping costs on the island that are then passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods. This is especially burdensome in Puerto Rico, where many goods must be imported.
